Fall Party/Parade
Our school Fall Party and Costume Parade will take place on Friday, October 27 at 1:30. Students are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to school for the day. As you choose costumes, please adhere to the following:  No inflatable costumes or costumes that make noise during the school day.  No costume weapons will be allowed.  Parents, you are welcome to dress up as well, but we ask that your face remain uncovered (no masks or costume make-up) so we can make positive identification for safety purposes.

Our Fall Costume Parade will begin at 1:30 (weather permitting) and will take place on the playground trail behind our school. At 1:05, the gate on the Dairy Queen side of the school will be opened for guests to begin entering the playground area to watch the parade. All guests should enter through the playground and not the front doors.

Please keep the sidewalks, walking path around the playground, and the drop off lane clear for students. Following the parade, students will return to their classrooms for a treat (provided by the school) and juice (provided by the homeroom moms).  If you would like to provide an activity or craft for your child’s class, please check with the homeroom mom.  You are also welcome to do an activity or craft on another day of the week by checking with your child’s teacher.  We welcome your involvement!

Parade Route: We will begin with fifth grade and parade in order down to kindergarten exiting the 4/5 door.  Students will take a left and enter the walking path, walk around and down the hill, follow along on the road and then take a left back into the building through the 4/5 door. Parents are invited to join the classroom party after the parade.

If contributing to classroom treat bag, please remember that due to county nutritional party guidelines and food allergies, we accept only non-food treat items.  (Examples, pencils, stickers, erasers, bracelets, etc.)

Classroom Food Policy
Please be aware that we do not allow any outside food brought into our classrooms to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays due to special dietary needs and food safety concerns. (WV Board of Education Policy 4321.1).

Any school-wide celebrations that include food items will be regulated through the school to comply with the state guidelines.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER From Mrs. Rumer-October is Red Ribbon Week and Unity Day
BULLYING is defined as “any intentional and repeated word, look, sign, or act that hurts a person’s body, feelings, or things.”  Bullying is a serious problem that can have long lasting effects on the victim.  If you suspect bullying, encourage your child to try the following techniques for dealing with the bully:

1. Tell the bully to STOP.
2. IGNORE the bully.
3. WALK AWAY from the bully and the situation.
4. TALK about his/her feelings with someone he/she trusts.
5. REPORT the bullying to an adult.

Please contact the school administrator or counselor with any concerns you have regarding bullying.  Together we can make our schools a safe environment for all students.  We will wear orange on Wednesday, October 18th in support of Unity Day!!

Red Ribbon Week will take place October 23-26. Theme days for the week were chosen by Mrs. Rumer’s Counselors Crew.
Monday, October 23 -- Wear College Apparel
Tuesday, October 24 -- Dress in a Past Decade
Wednesday, October 25 -- Color Day (Each grade level will be assigned a color)
Thursday, October 26 -- Wear Sweatshirt and Sweatpants

Is Your Child Getting Enough Sleep?
Did you know that the average elementary student needs 9-12 hours of sleep per night depending on his or her age? You can actually help your child have an optimal school day by assuring that they get plenty of rest the night before.

What is Accelerated Reader?
Scott Teays participates in the Accelerated Reader program for students in grades 1-5.  Students and teachers work together to set a reading goal for the year that is both realistic and achievable for the child, and then students read, read, read! Once students finish reading a book, they then take an online test to gain points toward their goal.  Most of our books in the library are AR Books, however, if parents want to check to see if a book has a corresponding test and/or the point value, arbookfind.com is a great resource.  We offer awesome reward incentives at the end of each nine-week period for those students who work hard and achieve their goal!!   Encourage your student to read, read, read... it’s the number one way in which to ensure academic achievement across all subject areas!

Save The Dates
Our fourth and fifth grade students will present a Veteran’s Day Program on Thursday, November 9 at 1:00.  The program will take place at Good Shepherd Baptist Church behind the school.  Be sure to invite veteran family members, friends, and neighbors.  We would love to honor their service.
Our third grade students will present a Christmas Program on the evening of Thursday, December 7 at 7:00 at Good Shepherd Baptist Church.

New Lunch Option
Putnam County Office of Child Nutrition has asked our cooks to offer an alternative lunch several times a month. This lunch option will be a school made “lunchable” style meal similar to the options that can be bought in grocery stores. Our cooks will make a certain number of lunchables and they will be available while supplies last on designated days. This alternative lunch will be offered on the following dates during the month of October: 11, 17, 20, 24, 27, 30 and November 2.
